Open the Book is a project, run by the Bible Society, offering primary school children an opportunity to hear the major stories of the Bible, presented chronologically.
In our Benefice it is run by a small team of volunteers from both Methodist and Anglican Churches across the 3 villages. The stories are presented at Collective Worship in dramatised form, usually with children taking part. Each presentation takes about 10 minutes and can stand alone or be part of a wider school assembly. We have been an active group for 18 months and have covered the stories of Creation, Joseph, Moses and at the end of last term Samuel. The most popular story was the crossing of the Red Sea as it involved lots of children! They really enjoy taking part!
We visit Birstwith, Hampsthwaite and Killinghall schools twice each term and are made very welcome by both staff and pupils.
Due to unforeseen circumstances, our current team finds itself unable to carry on at least for this term. We are really sad about this and would really love some others to join with us to be able to continue. You don’t need to be an aspiring actor, but you do need enthusiasm, humour, and a real desire to share the wonderful stories in the Bible with the children.
If you are interested in learning more about this please contact me and look at the Bible Society website to learn more about it too – I very much look forward to hearing from you. If you are unable to join us, please keep us in your prayers, that we may continue this vital work.
